    Slice the flank steak across the grain into thin filets, about ¼ inch thick and 3 inches wide. Lay them flat and generously spread one side with mustard. Place a slice of bacon, a few onion rings, and a couple of pickle slices on each filet, then roll them up snugly. Secure each roll with toothpicks or kitchen twine. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Nestle the rolls seam-side down and brown them on all sides, turning gently with tongs. I like to get a deep golden crust for extra flavor. Pour in the water, crumble in the bouillon cube, and stir until dissolved. Bring to a simmer, then lower the heat, cover, and let them cook for about an hour until the beef is fork-tender.
